Dauphin County Opens Cooling Centers to Help Residents Beat the Heat
HARRISBURG, PA (June 17, 2024) – The Dauphin County Commissioners have announced the opening of cooling stations at multiple area senior centers, libraries, churches and businesses for those without air conditioning, as temperatures are expected to soar above 100 degrees this week.
The cooling stations include the eight active Senior Centers (whose staff can accommodate non-members during the heat wave this week), Dauphin County libraries, churches, and businesses.
The county’s Area Agency on Aging also has a small number of air conditioning units and fans to lend seniors in need. Seniors can call 717-780-6131. The agency is working to obtain more for individuals who meet the eligibility requirements, which include being at or below 150% of the Federal Poverty Line. Fans and AC units are also provided through the Utility Assistance Program (LIHEAP).
“We encourage everyone to be a good neighbor and check in with their older relatives, friends, and neighbors to ensure they are healthy and safe,” said Commissioner George Hartwick, III, who has oversight of the Area Agency on Aging. “Also, be aware of the signs of dehydration and heat stroke.”
