Volunteer Opportunities

The Dauphin County Area Agency on Aging provides the following meaningful volunteer opportunities for people of all ages to serve others and their community:

PA MEDI State Health Insurance Program 
The State Health Insurance Assistance Program for all Medicare beneficiaries and Pennsylvanians age 60 and over.  Volunteers undergo free training in Medicare and health insurance in order to aid and counsel elderly individuals.  They assist and provide information on the easily confusing Medicare System.

  • Requirements/Special Skills:  Undergo free training through the 
    Pennsylvania Department of Aging in Medicare, Medicaid, Medicare Supplements, Appeals, Fraud and Abuse, Long term Care Insurance and prescription drug coverage. 
  • Current Need:  Volunteers always needed
Home Delivered Meals
Volunteers deliver weekly meals to homebound individuals in a certain area.  Meals are delivered to a central location in the community where the volunteer will pick up the meals and then deliver them to Agency clients on a pre-determined route. 

  • Hours/Days:  At least one weekday a week, every week.
  • Amount of time required:  A minimum of 45 minute
  • Location:  Your community
  • Requirement/Special Skills:  Community oriented and the ability to deliver meals to the homes of the elderly
  • Current Need:  Volunteers always needed
Transportation Services
Volunteers act as drivers or dispatchers for one of ten Dauphin County transportation groups that bring no-cost transportation to the seniors of their community.  Dispatchers coordinate rides and keep records/information on where individuals need to go.  Drivers drive 7-12 passenger vans taking seniors to various locations. 

  • Hours/Days:  Typically 4-6 hours one day a week
  • Amount of time required:  Varies

  • Requirement/Special Skills:  
    Able to drive 7-12 passenger van
    Have a good driving record
    Know your community
  • Current Need:  Volunteers always needed
Ombudsman
Volunteers are community neighbors who are specially trained to find answers and resolve problems people experience in the long-term care system.  They provide information and support to individuals under long-term care and also act as an advocate working to have the highest level of care delivered to the individual.

  • Requirement/Special Skills:  Must go through Ombudsman training
  • Current Need:  Volunteers always needed

DAUPHIN COUNTY COUNCIL ON AGING
IN NEED OF MEMBERS

The Dauphin County Council on Aging is seeking individuals to serve as Members of Council. Members may be representatives of major public and private organizations related to older persons; local government officials except county Commissioners ; public citizens knowledgeable regarding the special needs of older persons or interested in problems relating to older persons.
 
The purpose of the Dauphin County Council on Aging is to advise the Dauphin County Commissioners on all matters relating to the Dauphin County Area Plan of Services to the Aging.
