Volunteer Opportunities

Dauphin County Area Agency on Aging provides the following meaningful volunteer opportunities for people of all ages to serve others and their community.

 

Home Delivered Meals
Volunteers deliver weekly meals to homebound individuals in a designated area. Meals are collected at a central location in the community, where the volunteer picks them up and delivers them to Agency clients along a pre-determined route.

Hours/Days: Volunteers must commit to at least one weekday a month.
Time Commitment: A minimum of 45 minutes is required per meal delivery.
Location: Varies within Dauphin County
Requirements/Special Skills:

  • Access to a vehicle for transportation.
  •  Ability to deliver meals to the homes of homebound individuals.

Current Need: Volunteers are always needed to fulfill this important role.

 

Transportation Services
Volunteers serve as drivers or dispatchers for one of eight volunteer community-based transportation groups in Dauphin County. These groups provide no-cost transportation to the seniors in their communities. Dispatchers coordinate rides and maintain records and information about the destinations of individuals. Drivers then operate 7-12 passenger vans to transport seniors to various locations. 

Hours/Days: Typically 4-6 hours one day a week
Amount of time required: Varies
Location: Varies within Dauphin County
Requirement/Special Skills:

  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Hold a current and valid Pennsylvania driver’s license.
  • Be able to drive a 7-12 passenger van.
  • Provide official verification of driving history, including an approved driving record.
  • Demonstrate the ability to follow instructions in case of emergencies, such as medical emergencies or vehicle accidents.

Current Need: Volunteers are always needed to fulfill this important role.  

 

Ombudsman
Volunteers are community neighbors who are specially trained to educate and empower residents, families, and staff within the long-term care system.  They provide valuable information and guidance to individuals receiving long-term care and serve as supportive figures, promoting the highest quality of care.

Hours/Days: Hours and days vary, and they are flexible.
Amount of time required: Varies within Dauphin County
Location: Varies. Volunteers are assigned to specific long-term care home(s).
Requirement/Special Skills:

  • Must undergo Ombudsman training.
  • Maintain 18 hours of annual continued education.

Current Need:  Volunteers always needed to fulfill this important role.

PA MEDI State Health Insurance Program 

The State Health Insurance Assistance Program is for all Medicare beneficiaries in Pennsylvania.  Volunteers undergo free comprehensive training to understand Medicare and related health insurance options. Their primary role is to assist and counsel Medicare-eligible individuals, simplifying the often-complex Medicare System.

Hours/Days:  Varies within the range of M-F, 8AM-4PM

Amount of time required:  The time required varies, primarily during the open enrollment period, October-December.

Location:  Varies within Dauphin County

Requirements/Special Skills: 

  • Undergo free training through the Pennsylvania Department of Aging in Medicare, Medicaid, Medicare Supplements, Appeals, Fraud and Abuse, Long term Care Insurance and prescription drug coverage. 
  • Cannot have an active insurance license.

DAUPHIN COUNTY COUNCIL ON AGING

IN NEED OF MEMBERS

The Dauphin County Council on Aging is seeking individuals to serve as Members of Council. Members may be representatives of major public and private organizations related to older persons; local government officials except county Commissioners; public citizens knowledgeable regarding the special needs of older persons or interested in problems relating to older persons.

The purpose of the Dauphin County Council on Aging is to advise the Dauphin County Commissioners on all matters relating to the Dauphin County Area Plan of Services to the Aging.
